Common questions

How much does oil tank removal cost?

The NYS DEC puts typical removal at $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the tank's size, condition and access. Soil cleanup, if the tank leaked, is extra and can be much more. The contractor gives you a written quote first.

Should I remove the tank or abandon it in place?

The DEC calls removal the best choice. Closure in place is an option when removal isn't practical, but it usually requires the tank to be intact and the soil clean, and buyers may still ask for removal later.

Do I need a permit?

In most Westchester municipalities, yes. For example, Pleasantville requires a building department permit and inspection, and Croton-on-Hudson requires an inspection application. A licensed contractor normally handles the permit.

What if the tank leaked?

Report any actual spill or leak to the NYS DEC Spills Hotline at 1-800-457-7362. Cleanup can be expensive, and many homeowner insurance policies have a pollution exclusion, so check your policy.
